Week 2

What a great second week we all had in Watermelon Class!

We have started writing the alphabet this week. All the students are working hard and improving quickly!

In math class we looked at money from all around the world! We played with different types of money from Canada, Europe, Africa and Taiwan of course.

In art class we made our treasure chests! Everyone is very creative and doing a great job on their project. They are looking beautiful and we will finish them next week.

We played a new racing game to review body part vocabulary. Melody scored the winning point for the girls' team - well done Melody!!

We had a lot of fun in cooking class making rice balls with Teacher Mickey! Everyone got creative with their shapes and seaweed. They tasted delicious too!

Thank you Allen for bringing us all cookies on Thursday! Yummy!

We are very excited about next week:

  • Our big trip to Baby Boss!! (09-26-12)
  • Finishing our art projects
  • Science experiments - exploring our senses to smell, taste, and touch!
  • We are almost finished our Alphabet Books! We will finish them next week and then the students can take them home to show you!
  • Cooking class with ME, Teacher Jennifer - I am so so excited :)
Well I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Keep smiling,

Teacher Jennifer

September: All About ME

The month of September is all about ME!

In science class we are learning all about ourselves! We are learning about the human body, inside and out. We will be exploring our five senses: to see, smell, hear, taste and touch and doing some fun experiments.

In art class we are getting creative! All our art projects are about each individual student: what makes them special, original and beautiful! We will be making treasure chests where the students can keep their best schoolwork, art, and other little bits and things they want to add. At the end of the year the students will open them up and show everyone their personal treasures!!

Every Friday afternoon in music class we learn a new song, so on this month's playlist we will be dancing along to The Hokey Pokey and Head and Shoulders, as we learn about the names of our different body parts. You can find the lyrics to all of our songs in class on the Music page.

Friday morning is storytime! We get to cuddle together on the carpet and read a new book together. On the bookshelf this month we have: You and Me and Swing High Swing Low.

In the kitchen we are cooking up a storm! We will be making rice balls and candy bird's nests.

We are looking forward to our big trip at the end of the month! We will be going to Baby Boss on Wednesday September 26th.

Vocabulary this month includes:

Face parts: eyes, ears, mouth, nose, hair, cheeks, chin, teeth
Body parts: head, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, feet, toes, elbows, knees
Inside the body: brain, heart, lungs, stomach
The 5 senses: touch, taste, hear, smell, see

Meet the New Teacher

Hello Parents!

My name is Jennifer Bryson, and I am new to HESS International Kindergarten this year. I am starting to settle into my new life in Taipei, after arriving in Taiwan a few weeks ago. Originally, I am from Toronto, Canada, but as many people know, I like to move around quite a bit. This is the fourth country I have lived in, after having also living in Australia and France. I believe that traveling, living in a foreign culture, and exploring the new and unknown are such wonderful life-changing experiences. You can learn a wealth of knowledge about the world and yourself this way.

I graduated from Queen's University (Kingston, Canada) with an Honour's Bachelor's Degree of Fine Art. I have always loved working with children. Starting at a young age and continuing throughout my life I have worked with them in a variety of settings including coaching gymnastics and swimming lessons, working at summer camps, tutoring and working as an art club instructor.

I believe that teaching is such an awarding, enriching and challenging experience. I spent the last year teaching English as a foreign language in France. I really loved my work there, which is why I am so excited to be back in the classroom again this year! I love teaching because I love to learn. The more my students learn, the more I can in turn learn from them.

Keep smiling,

Teacher Jennifer

Welcome to Watermelon Class!

Hello parents and students!

The month of September rings in the new school year, and with that comes along a new group of bright and smiling students!

Welcome to Watermelon Class's website, the online resource for your student's learning this year. Here you can find news and updates, photos, what's happening in our different classes, information on HESS Kindergarten curriculum, in addition to links and other fun stuff. You will able to follow your child's in-class progress through the school year!

Watermelon Class encourages an ALL ENGLISH atmosphere. The best way to learn a language is to dive in head first, and be totally engulfed by it: speaking, listening, reading and writing English! This means that my students will also be exposed to English-speaking cultures, including my own. One-on-one contact is very important, and in this small group setting I will devote time to dealing with each student's individual needs strengths and needs, and improving their weaknesses.

It is clear that Watermelon Class is a group of four very clever and talented little learners. I am really looking forward to our year together and watching the ways in which they will grow! I believe that every student can bring something unique and special to this world, and in Watermelon Class I will help them to develop this potential and discover their own beliefs.

If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to contact me, Teacher Jennifer: jbryson@live.ca. Please don't hesitate!

This website is still under construction, so keeping checking back for there is much more to come!

Keep smiling,

Teacher Jennifer
